Equity, Inclusion and Justice

Many injustices still exist within our food system and Slow Food is dedicated to the development of an equitable, just and healthy local food system that truly works for all of us.

In 2020, Slow Food Seattle joined other Slow Food chapters in taking steps to further our commitment to equity, inclusion and justice. We publicly committed to enacting greater justice in our work, agreed to a code of conduct for creating safe spaces, and created and publicly stated our next action steps toward greater equity and justice.

Slow Food Seattle’s Equity, Inclusion and Justice Commitment

  1. We will create meaningful ways to acknowledge the Indigenous peoples for their stewardship of the land we now occupy. This will not be an empty gesture, but will be one of many steps toward supporting and building relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations and grassroots change movements.

  2. We will strive to produce website content and promotional materials that highlight social and food justice, and acknowledge those who have contributed to our good, clean and fair food system. We will also review digital content, and revise where needed, to ensure inclusive, appropriate language.

  3. We will increase our annual donations of Makah Ozette seed potato to include more indigenous organizations, community gardens and food sovereignty programs. We will support and bring awareness to their programs by sharing their stories on our website and social media platforms.

  4. We will develop collaborative relationships with organizations that support local Black, Indigenous and people of color. We will extend and deepen our support for local farmers, gardeners and growers including immigrant and refugee farmers.

  5. We will connect with the Seattle-area Slow Food Youth Network to collaborate on events and programs. Through this effort, we hope to become a more dynamic organization that prioritizes the values driving younger Slow Food members and cultivates life-long leaders of the movement.

  6. We will create volunteer and fundraising opportunities to build and support educational gardens and edible landscapes and promote food literacy in public schools and community gardens.
